About This Project
This newspaper was created as part of the course requirements for the Spring 2020 section of German 4520, the senior capstone class required for the German major at the University of Georgia. This section was taught by Dr. Joshua Bousquette. The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies is headed by Dr. Alexander Sager.
The content of this newspaper is both fiction and non-fiction. The national and international news events are true and relevant to the time period of the publication. The local news and features are based off of the play “For Mayor Godfrey Buehler,” written by Julius Gugler and published in 1892. The play follows the days leading up to the mayoral election in Porcupine City, a fictional town based on Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The grammar and linguistic choices of the articles are based on those used by the characters in the play. This paper is meant to have come out the day after the election. Godfrey Buehler, a German immigrant, won the election, but was forced to forfeit to his opponent Judge Thompson, an “Anglo,” as it was discovered that Buehler had never become a US citizen.
